Maryland starts testing its online sports betting market

Soft launches are underway before a formal launch of sportsbooks

Maryland’s online sports betting marketplace has begun its first trials in which many residents were able to participate yesterday. With great news to start the week, residents in the Old Line State were introduced to a highly anticipated new form of entertainment. A soft launch period for legal Maryland sports betting took place yesterday and multiple online sportsbooks were part of the process. Some fans on Americas Cardroom may already have an idea of what this market will look like in the future.

BetRivers and Caesars were two of the operators that enabled those applications to accept bets for a limited time. New users in Maryland were able to find special offers at both sportsbooks.

It is worth noting that yesterday was not the day people have been looking forward to exactly since they gave the go-ahead on the ballot more than two years ago. Still, the soft launch represents an important step towards making the launch date a success.

Both online sports betting operators and regulators used an eight-hour window yesterday to conduct their testing period on several licensed sports betting applications. The idea behind this is to ensure that they have a robust process in place that is capable of following compliance with established regulations.

Starting at 2:00 PM Eastern Time yesterday, several sportsbooks were able to accept a few sports bets on their applications. At 10:00 PM, those apps went back into a sort of “dark mode” where they can only be used for account registrations and deposits. That status will remain until regulatory approval for full and permanent launches in Maryland is announced.
