The New Orleans Saints aren’t wasting time filling out updated roster

The Saints have added six players to futures contracts

With the 2021 NFL season being a thing of the past for the New Orleans Saints, management now seems to not want to waste time and decided to think about the future. Simply put, the Saints are looking to bolster their next roster. That’s why last Tuesday, they signed six players to futures contracts, according to different news sources.

The new additions bring the names of Blake Bortles (QB), Malcolm Roach (DT), Cohl Cabral (C), Bryce Thompson (S), Ethan Wolf (TE) and Kevin White (WR). One of those who has stayed with the team the longest has been Roach. The undrafted rookie out of Texas played in 16 games over the past two seasons, including seven this year. According to the stats, Roach managed to get one interception, two QB pressures, and ten total tackles in 2021.

On the other side is White, a number-7 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. Prior to being signed by the Saints this summer, he had suffered a slew of injuries, resulting in him appearing in only 17 games over five seasons. White appeared in six games for New Orleans, where he recorded one pass for 38 yards.

Then there is Bortles, who was the third pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent five seasons as Jacksonville’s starter before serving as a backup for the Los Angeles Rams and the Green Bay Packers in 2019 and 2020. He was added as a backup by the Saints late this offseason after both Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill were added to the Reserve/COVID list. He backed up rookie QB Ian Book in a loss to the Dolphins.

The signings two days ago join eight players signed to reserve futures contracts by New Orleans on Monday, which added Kawaan Baker and Easop Winston to the equation.
