Sega reportedly set to open second gaming development studio

Sega may not be the leader in video game development, but it is mounting a comeback

Sega has announced the opening of Sega Sapporo Studio as its second game development studio in Japan. It will be headed by Takaya Segawa, who has worked as the lead producer of Phantasy Star Online 2 for a long time.

Sega is opening its second Japan-based studio in Sapporo for development and testing of new games. The news came out yesterday following the company’s announcement, which has dubbed it the Sega Sapporo Studio. The name is obviously inspired by the city where it is located. Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, on the northernmost island of Japan.

Segawa, who has worked at the company since 1992, has also been in charge of major games. One of them is that of the chief producer of Phantasy Star Online 2 during the past decade. This is the company’s second development studio based in the Asian country and was previously centered in Tokyo.

The new studio will have a special focus. It will be in charge of creating games and testing them for bugs, ensuring their quality, and bringing much more enjoyable experiences to end-users.

In addition, it looks like they will focus on hiring local employees, which is incredible news for those with vast knowledge in the industry who are still unemployed. Hokkaido has been a cultural center for quite some time, with many educational institutions such as vocational schools and universities. This has made it an attractive place to secure strong human resources.

The press release mentions that Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto is delighted with the opening of the studio because of all the great benefits it brings. It will work to promote the growth of creative industries and, in doing so, Akimoto hopes it will become a target for CG and programming students.
