Football Legend John Madden passes away at age 85
By Bob Garcia
The football world lost one of its greatest icons with the passing of John Madden this past Tuesday. He was 85 years old.
One of the more interesting things about Madden is he’s basically famous for three separate roles within the game. If you are older than 50, you might best remember him as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, winning the Super Bowl (1976) and having several other memorable playoff appearances during this 10-year, Hall of Fame career.
Madden then went on to an illustrious broadcast career, working for four different networks and most notably pairing with play-by-play man Pat Summerall. They were considered the best duo in the game and were behind the mic for many of the biggest games in NFL history, including several Super Bowls.
Finally, there are many younger football fans who don’t even know Madden was a coach or an announcer. He is famous to them for his association with the Madden NFL video game. The overwhelming popularity of this game has been of historic proportions and it should continue for years and years to come, keeping the Madden name alive for future generations.
