Sports betting kiosks in downstate New York could come if bill approved

The Empire State is eyeing a massively flexible sports betting market

Joseph Addabbo, Jr. is one of those New York senators who simply seeks to do whatever it takes to make the most of lucrative markets, such as sports betting. Now, one of his new efforts is to legalize mobile betting kiosks for this market, and to that end, he has recently introduced a bill. Among the proposed locations are professional sports venues and arenas, virtual lottery terminals, racetracks, and off-track betting sites.

According to the text set forth in Senate Bill S7536, the legislation would “clarify the sporting events on which wagers may be placed and authorize mobile sports betting operators to site kiosks at selected affiliated locations.”

It should be noted that New York retail sports betting is currently available only in certain locations in upstate New York; however, this market has yet to open its doors in the Big Apple. While it is true that online sports betting has been legalized in the state, it has been made clear that it is not likely to become operational until February of next year.

It is highly unlikely that Addabbo’s bill will be able to bring the state legislature together to discuss it before the end of this year, especially since the holiday recess is soon to begin. However, there is a possibility that this issue could be taken up in early 2022, and if it gets the green light, it could take effect as early as February. The idea is that by this time, online sports betting will be at its peak since in the middle of that month, the Super Bowl LV is expected to take place.
