Ohio expects to move sports betting bill forward soon

Ohio lawmakers are optimistic they can finally make progress with sports betting legislation

It appears that the push to legalize sports betting in Ohio is getting all the optimism from a leading legislator as he indicates that its chances of becoming a reality can already be seen on the horizon. Earlier this week, he said a conference committee could be meeting next week to hammer out the final details and send the final bill to Governor Mike DeWine’s desk.

Senate Majority Leader Kirk Schuring said during an interview earlier this week that Senate President Matt Huffman is making every effort to meet with House Speaker Bob Cupp soon. The goal of the meeting is to get a clear idea of what the House expects regarding the sports betting bill. If this meeting is formalized, then it would be a critical piece for the conference committee to start taking action on the issue and look to work on a compromise bill that both chambers would need to pass.

“We’re getting there,” the senator said. “I’m really looking forward to the meeting this week with Speaker Cupp. I know he’s had meetings with some of his members, particularly the members from the conference committee, and so, we’re hoping we’re reaching a point of critical mass where we can finally get this done.”

The conference committee meeting is all the more necessary because the Senate mid-year, once it had passed a stand-alone bill, attached an amended version of the gaming bill to House Bill 29, which would create a state ID card for veterans. The thought process was that the changes would have received the green light from the House, which would have resulted in a bill arriving early in the governor’s office before lawmakers adjourned for a summer recess. However, this never happened, and now a few more processes have to be implemented along the way. Still, Schuring is hopeful that all will work out and that soon, Buckeye State residents will have the opportunity to place their bets next spring.
