New Orleans Saints head coach confident more players are returning from injuries

Sean Payton is optimistic his roster will soon be back to normal

Although the names may not have been specified, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton concluded a press conference yesterday with clear positivity, indicating that there is a strong possibility that several players on the injured reserve list could be ready to return to the field. The words of encouragement come on the heels of Pro Bowl kicker Wil Lutz, linebacker Kwon Alexander, wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith and defensive end Marcus Davenport being designated to return earlier this week.

Some of the names that have a good chance of returning to action after some time on the injured reserve list would be corner Ken Crawley, tight end Nick Vannett and linebacker Chase Hansen. However, expectations shouldn’t be too high either, as all have been eligible to return for a few weeks now, and that doesn’t exactly mean they’re healthy enough to receive their respective designation. Keep in mind that both Terron Armstead and Erik McCoy, both starting offensive linemen, never went on injured reserve in the first place, so they can practice and play as soon as they are healthy.

The moment Payton was asked about All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas, who spent the first six weeks on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, the coach only responded back with a quick “We’ll have to see how it goes.” While it is true that it is possible that not all of the aforementioned players will be able to play Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks, it is possible that they will at least be cleared to join their teammates in practice and thus attempt to get the green light to suit up. Definitely a big step in the right direction for the Saints.
