Launch of sports betting in Maryland delayed

The issuance of three licenses to casinos yesterday was unexpectedly postponed

It was originally proposed that there would be a regulatory meeting in Maryland yesterday to address important issues regarding the state’s sports betting. However, the meeting was postponed, and this has raised many questions about the delays currently facing the launch of this market. Many important actions were supposed to be taken through this meeting, but it seems that they were just wishful thinking, at least for the time being.

The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) was supposed to meet to discuss and possibly even grant retail licenses to Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, MGM National Harbor and Live! Casino and Hotel this week. However, with no explanation, the SWARC simply scratched off the meeting and listed it as “postponed” on its calendar. Last October 6, the three casinos qualified under “alternative licensing standards” through the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) in an attempt to accelerate Maryland’s launch this fall.

The vote a few days ago came nearly two months after the SWARC cleared the MLGCC’s qualification as “sufficient” to grant retail licenses to the casinos. Because everything was looking so good, the 17 designated locations began applying for licenses about a month ago.

The regulatory meeting was going to be of great importance in order to continue the launching path. However, the new meeting date has not been published on the official SWARC website. In fact, before the postponement happened, Governor Larry Hogan took to his official Twitter account to ask residents of the Old Line State to pressure SWARC to take action on the three licenses as soon as possible. It appears that those efforts did not bear fruit, and now we must wait for a new date to be set.
