Florida’s sports betting efforts now facing lengthy delay

The Sunshine State should have been ready to launch sports betting October 15

Efforts to bring the sports betting market to become a reality in the state of Florida have a new hurdle to face. While it is certain that sports betting becomes legal tomorrow, local sources indicate that sportsbooks will not go public for up to 60 days. This means bettors in the Sunshine State will have to wait – patiently or otherwise.

Sports betting is waiting to be fully managed by the Seminole Tribe. Both retail and online sports betting options will be available to bettors in the state, housed at the Tampa Hard Rock and Hollywood locations. Many were expecting the legalization process to be finalized tomorrow; however, it appears that this will not be the case as the Seminole Tribe has been quick to correct a Semitic error indicating that they are still ready to begin sometime this fall.

Despite the hiccups that are delaying the process at this time, bettors can expect to have access to online and in-person wagering services in the last month of the year. The good news is that the launch of sports betting will also bring more additions to the state’s casinos, as roulette and craps games have also been given the green light to be allowed.

Many involved in the issue believe that recent lawsuits are a major reason why Florida sports betting is experiencing delays. Both the tribe and the state have three pending lawsuits to confront. Two of those three lawsuits are led by local parimutuels and outside business entities. The goal of these lawsuits is to delegitimize the authority of the governor and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Through the lawsuits, they are seeking to stop all efforts that have been made so far to allow the commercial groups to have a significant share of the market as well.
