EA eliminating Jon Gruden from Madden NFL 22 video game in light of scandal

After resigning as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders for making offensive comment in a series of leaked emails, Jon Gruden has also lost a virtual gig. EA Sports announced yesterday that it is dropping Gruden’s likeness from Madden NFL 22.

In a statement release on Wednesday night, the company said, “EA Sports is committed to taking action in maintaining a culture of inclusion and equity. Due to the circumstances of Jon Gruden’s resignation, we are taking steps to remove him from Madden NFL 22. We will replace him with a generic likeness via a title update in the coming weeks.”

Gruden isn’t the only NFL coach whose likeness won’t appear in Madden NFL22. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was previously omitted from the video game for licensing reasons. Unlike the rest of his National Football League counterparts, Belichick is not an NFL Coaches Association member.

EA Sports has taken swift action in the past to avoid other controversies. Following his first-degree murder conviction in 2013, New England Patriot, Aaron Hernandez was deleted from both NCAA Football 14 and the 25th Anniversary edition of Madden NFL. After footage of the Baltimore Raven’s Ray Rice assaulting his spouse went public, the company pulled the running back from NFL 15. Most recently, the EA eliminated the Redskins name and logo from Madden NFL 21.

Madden NFL 22 is available in Xbox, PlayStation, and PC versions. The title can also be found on Steam, Stadia, EA Play, and EA Play Pro. More information about Madden NFL 22 is available at ea.com/games/madden-nfl/.
