Netflix has purchased its first video game studio

Digital media is rapidly becoming the mainstream option, even for video gamers

Netflix has announced the acquisition of California-based video game developer Night School Studio. The company was founded by Sean Krankel and Adam Hines in 2014 and is now the first studio to become part of the streaming platform. The purchase was made as part of Netflix’s new strategy to include video games in its streaming service. While a move like this may be very common in large companies such as Sony or EA Sports, the fact that Netflix is doing so is a clear demonstration that it intends to enter a competitive market, in which it expects to have great success.

The streaming giant announced the deal on its website. Night School, on the other hand, also confirmed the purchase separately on its own site, saying it is “a surreal honor to be the first game studio to join Netflix.” Night School Studio has been recognized for developing games such as Oxenfree and Afterparty, which have been critically acclaimed for their special emphasis on narrative design along with diverse interactive options intended for players with any type of video game experience. Netflix plans to make the games part of its subscription, with no ads or in-app purchases.

“We will continue to work with developers from around the world and recruit the best talent in the field,” Mike Verdu, VP of game development, said in the blog post. The renowned streaming platform explained that it is still in the early stages of its plan to create great video game experiences, but this hiring would be one of the definitive decisions to move towards that goal.

It is not yet clear what this alliance will look like in practice; however, it has already been reported that the platform’s games are already being made available in Spain for users with Android devices. Analysts predict that the service will offer mobile, desktop, and console titles. This is a risky but very original strategy to face the stiff competition that has emerged in recent years from Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max.
