Did Kevin Durant nix a Kyrie Irving to Philly trade?
By Bob Garcia
The saga between the Philadelphia 76ers and Ben Simmons continues with no end in sight. Simmons has said he will never suit up for the team again and Philly management is willing to trade him, as long as they get an appropriate return.
We’ve seen lots of teams mentioned as potential Simmons destinations like Golden State, Portland, Minnesota, Cleveland and Houston. But one team (Brooklyn) has barely come up and now we might know the reason why.
During a rant yesterday, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said that Nets’ management would be willing to trade Irving to Philly in a package for Simmons. It’s not known whether Philly would have similar interest, but it’s not happening anyhow because Kevin Durant vetoed any such possibility.
Smith seems to think that Simmons going to Brooklyn (+235 odds) would wrap up the title for them due to his defensive ability and unselfish playmaking. However, I think the bigger beneficiary would be the 76ers (+1850 odds) who could use Irving’s scoring ability and clutchness in the playoffs (neither of which Simmons has).
So while this trade is not likely to happen, it’s still interesting to think of the possibility.
