The New Orleans Saints could announce their starting quarterback this week

The Saints are close to making a decision, but head coach Sean Payton isn’t in a rush
The biggest question of who will be the next quarterback for the New Orleans Saints since the retirement of Drew Brees could have an answer this week, according to head coach Sean Payton. The race has long been known to be between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill, and while both have shown they have their stuff, the final decision still doesn’t appear to be clear, at least not to outsiders. The team’s performance yesterday against the Jacksonville Jaguars showed what’s in store and, while Payton may be close to a decision, he also admits that he’s not in a hurry to make the call.
The Saints’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers is just around the corner; however, before that happens, Payton wants to get the team settled. That’s why the coach told NBC’s Peter King that he intends to name the successor to Brees’ reign by Saturday’s preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. “The decision weighs on me,” Payton said.
The Saints managed to come out victorious last night against the Jaguars, with a final score of 23-21. During this game, Winston was the starter, and it seems to have turned out pretty well. However, this does not mean that the decision has been made, as Saturday’s performance remains to be seen. Hill started in last week’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but Winston played about the same amount of snaps at the end of the night.
So far, the numbers between the two players appear to be fairly even in camp. Winston has completed 146 of 220 passes (66.36%), with nine touchdowns and four interceptions during team drills, while teammate Hill has completed 134 of 205 (65.37%) passes with four touchdowns and six interceptions in those same practices.
Payton hopes to make a wise decision for the team, especially as this is a position that is quite delicate for success in a season that looks to be action-packed.
