Maryland a step closer to legalized sports betting after rules published

Maryland’s gaming regulator announces the final draft rules for sports betting in the state

The finish line for sports betting in the state of Maryland is looking closer and closer, especially since late last week the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) released proposed regulations for public review. The Old Line State is getting closer to seeing its own local sports betting market opens its doors and bettors couldn’t be more excited.

All stakeholders and residents were given a total of 30 days to review and comment on the rules published in the Maryland Register. This public review has always worked great for regulators to be clear on what the public expects and to adjust the regulations as much as possible to meet the needs of all involved, whether directly or indirectly. This is the standard process for the official launch of sports betting markets, which has had to be gone through in states where it has already become a reality. Once the 30-day period is over, the final approval of regulations and rules that will be established for the proper control of sports betting in the state will take place.

It is very likely that this 200+ page document will become the framework for Maryland’s sports betting market. Once final approval is received, the MLGCC will be responsible for issuing sports betting licenses. The MLGCC is scheduled to hold a public comment meeting on September 22. Although many dates have been set and sports betting is on the horizon, no official date has been set for the launch of the industry in the state. However, it is known that it will not be long before the market opens its doors once all the regulatory paperwork is in order.
