Minecraft was overwhelmingly the most popular video game of the decade
The beauty of the video game world is that over the last ten years, gamers of different types of consoles have not been able to complain about the lack of great titles. Quite the opposite has been true, and the sheer number of video games available over the last decade has made more and more people join the community, especially those who want to face their friends in a competitive way with the online mode. The decade of the ‘90s was undoubtedly dominated by Super Mario and Pokemon, but without a doubt, the period from 2011 to the present was arguably even better, and there are five main reasons why.
Red Dead Redemption 2 currently ranks as the number five highest-grossing and most popular video game of the last decade. Having been released at the end of October 2018, Rockstar’s long-awaited sequel to the 2010 open-world western is here to stay in the hearts of many gamers. It took just three days on the PS4 and Xbox One market to generate more than $700 million in revenue.
In fourth place is Mario Kart 8, a game that has never ceased to amaze. This title undoubtedly quickly became the best-selling Wii U game of all time. In combined sales, Nintendo has reported around 44 million units sold.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds takes the third position. It’s been nearly four years since its release and the game has sold more than 70 million copies, a number that leaves Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and The Last of Us combined behind.
The number two spot goes to none other than Grand Theft Auto V. Its huge popularity has seen it report a total of 145 million sales in the process.
At the top of the list, first place has been taken home by Minecraft. After being released for PC exactly ten years ago, it still has more than 100 million active users and has managed to accumulate a total of 200 million copies sold, surpassing any game in history.
