This is the first year the annual awards has included a video game category
The Hugo Awards have long been known for recognizing essentially science fiction genre writing. However, an important addition will be found for this year’s presentation to be held in December. DisCon III, the 79th World Science Fiction Convention, made an announcement late last year that the Best Video Game category will be included in these nominations. This certainly adds an interesting format for gamers around the world to follow and see which of their favorites will take home the award. With the awards ceremony approaching, the video game nominees have now been revealed.
Colette Fozard, the co-chair of DisCon llI, said in the announcement, “Since the beginning of 2020, many of us have spent more time playing than we expected. This award will offer fans the opportunity to celebrate the games that have been meaningful, joyful, and exceptional over the past year.” She has made it clear that at the end of the day, video games have had a great relationship with science fiction where they have also functioned as an inspiration for the creation of several stories.
The games that are included in the nomination are Hades, Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Blaseball Spiritfarer, and The Last of Us: Part II. This major event is scheduled for December 15 and 19, 2021 – a delay from the previously-scheduled dates – and will be held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. At the moment, it is not known if the inclusion of video games as a category will be maintained in the next galas, but this year will definitely be the most exciting for all the enthusiasts of this universe.
