Online poker licenses not being issued in Dubai
By Bob Garcia
Despite rumors to the contrary, the government of Dubai is not issuing gambling licenses. The government officially denied social media reports that suggested the emirate was doling out licenses for gambling activities including poker, online and off.
The media office of the government of Dubai noted that reports on social media regarding gambling licenses are “incorrect”. They did not provide any further details or issue any further statement.
Gambling is not permitted in the UAE. While the government does allow some organizations to hold raffles and other competitions, they require the express permission from various regulatory government bodies. Gambling, like casino games and poker, have not been authorized.
It’s also even more unlikely that online poker and online casino games have been licensed in Dubai, particularly because the UAE has separate laws that specifically outlaw online gambling.
Under its Cyber Crimes Law, anyone caught operating an online gambling business within Dubai can face serious penalties.
And complicating matters even more is a requirement for Internet Service Providers to block websites that provide illegal content, which includes online poker, online casino, and other online betting content.
Dubai is home to a large ex-pat community, attracting people from all over the world. With a goal of becoming a more tolerant society and welcoming a variety of views and opinions, there is some hope that Dubai may open up to more gambling. But because gambling is considered a sin under Islamic law, a change in law could be a long way off.
