Arizona Governor Doug Ducey makes sports gambling official in the state
Yesterday it became official. Arizona joins the list of states where sports betting is legal. This news was formalized after the Governor of the state, Doug Ducey, finally signed the bill into law. It’s been a long road to reach this point, with previous attempts failing. However, Governor Ducey has been working diligently with the state’s tribes to find an equitable solution.
Since sports gambling is now a reality, the MLB’s Diamondbacks, the NHL’s Coyotes, the NFL’s Cardinals and the NBA’s Suns will now be able to obtain a license that allows them to operate sports betting in their states without any inconvenience. The same will happen with tribal casinos. Since earlier this week, the green light had been given as both chambers had passed bills that would legalize sports betting in Arizona. The wait is over and there is no doubt that many gamblers are more than pleased with the outcome.
“I don’t think we’re talking about the $10 million. We’re talking $100 million,” State Representative Jeff Weninger said optimistically. This bill was sponsored by Weninger and according to his estimates, the state will be very grateful for the revenue this legislation will bring in. The legislation is still awaiting approval by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the federal government, and while this is considered a formality, it is expected that the process could take an additional three months.
The teams were very relieved and excited about this new legislation. “The legalization of mobile sports betting will forever change the sports and entertainment landscape in the state and open the door to a fan engagement revolution that will be led by the Phoenix Suns, the Valley’s first major sports team, and FanDuel, the leader in online sports, a gaming company in the United States and a licensed gaming operator and official daily fantasy partner of the NBA.” they added in a release.
