Hearing for crypto Twitter hackers disrupted by porn and rap music

The hearing was held over Zoom, which is known to be an easy target for hackers

Earlier this week, the investigation of the massive cryptocurrency hack of the social platform Twitter last month ended with the arrest of three young men – two of them teenagers. With COVID-19 still making live meetings impossible, they had a virtual hearing scheduled for August 5, but it had to be postponed due to a particular disruption. While defendants were connected through a Zoom call, an infiltrator “broke into the call to interrupt the proceedings,” reported the Tampa Bay Times. “Posing as CNN and BBC News, they repeatedly interrupted the meeting with rap music, movie dialogue and shouting,” added the news outlet.

Graham Ivan Clark was taken into custody on July 31 as the alleged mastermind behind the Twitter attack that took place on July 15. Apparently, he used social engineering methods to obtain access to the platform from one IT employee, which he then used to breach the accounts of known personalities and companies, such as Joe Biden and Bill Gates and even cryptocurrency-related companies to ask for Bitcoins to be send. Those behind this breach constantly interrupted the hearing by projecting pornographic materials onto viewers’ computers; therefore, the Florida judge had to call for a dismissal.

This hack was considered massive because of the number of accounts that were hacked; however, the funds collected by the perpetrators was not that much. A total of $117,000 worth of Bitcoin was transferred to that address, and that is a much smaller amount than the $725,000 the authorities established for Clark’s bail. According to the defendant’s attorney, the amount set is quite “disproportionate.” However, it is also believed that Clark had as much as $3 million in crypto squirreled away, which makes him a flight risk.
