Developers spent $1 million to create a Lord of the Rings video game that never survived
The game was scrapped after presented to Warner Bros.
The trilogy of the Lord of the Rings was immensely popular back when it came out. It was a great adaptation from the novels by the same name, which has continued to grow in popularity and drawing newer audiences to discover this story these days. There was even a pitch presented by the development studio Traveller’s Tale, one that cost the studio over a million dollars; however, the demo still looks pretty decent and holding up quite well all these years later.
Traveller’s Tale is the development studio that created the Lego games. It has been releasing Lego games consistently for over a decade now, with no intention of cutting back. Also, back in 2008, the company decided to do something different than just Lego titles and offered its take on a Hobbit video game in conjunction with the release of the films that were about to be released. In order to demonstrate their abilities, the developers brought a pitch demo featuring a few moments from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was showcased in a new video uploaded that featured Jon Burton and Guillermo Del Toro.
The problem was faced when the pitch was taken to Warner Bros. It decided that the game shouldn’t be a direct movie adaptation but a game set within the same universe. As a result of this opinion, the game was scrapped in favor of Shadow of Mordor. However, the visuals that were spotted in this demo look like they would have been a quite detailed gameplay adventure.
