The New Orleans Saints are ready to start training replacement for Brees
When Brees retires the Saints know exactly who they want to lead the way at quarterback
For some New Orleans Saints fans, even though quarterback Drew Brees has signed a two-year contract to lead the team, this might be his last season. For the Saints, it is important to start evaluating who could be the best option to replace Brees once he calls it a career either ending this season or at the end of next year, and it seems to be the team already knows who the successor should be. Somewhat surprising to some fans, it won’t be free-agent quarterback signee Jameis Winston, but dual-threat option Taysom Hill.
“He’s a bigger Lamar Jackson. [Payton] likes him that much, he’ll be the guy,” Glazer wrote in a mailbag for The Athletic. Hill recently signed a two-year contract extension with the franchise and, at this point, is one of the highest-paid back-up quarterbacks in all the NFL, so it is expected that he gets a leading role in the near future. “When that time comes — and that’ll be probably at some point sooner than later — and Drew (Brees) decides to retire, I see Taysom (Hill) being a guy that has a great chance to come in there and become that quarterback,” head coach Sean Payton told Aditi Kinkhabwala on CBS Sports Network’s “We Need To Talk” last week.
On the other hand, Winston recently signed a one-year deal with New Orleans during the free agency period; Winston hopes to find in the Saints an opportunity to get a starting role as a quarterback; however, the Saints might not be for the team for him to achieve that.
