The New Orleans Saints tap top player from the XFL
Cornerback Deatrick Nichols showed his skills in the XFL and will now be in a Saints uniform
Just five weeks after the XFL football league started, it was shut down due to the global coronavirus pandemic. But at least for those five weeks, players were able to show their talents and get a degree of exposure that brought benefits for more than one player of the league. Several players are being signed to the NFL, such as quarterback P.J. Walker signing a new deal with Carolina Panthers and quarterback Jordan Ta’amu with the Kansas City Chiefs. The New Orleans Saints franchise showed interest in one of the league’s top defensive players, who is now going to be playing for the Saints. Deatrick Nichols has signed a one-year contract with the team.
The cornerback from the XFL is the leader in XFL interceptions with three in five games and is ready to shine in the NFL, although this won’t be his first appearance in the league. Nichols, a 5-foot-10, 189-pound defensive back, was signed by the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 as an undrafted free agent. A former USF star, he appeared in two regular games of the season and registered a solo special teams tackle.
The Saints’ announcement was made through a Twitter post in which the franchise was welcoming Nichols to New Orleans.
The team said, “The #Saints have agreed to terms with the XFL’s interception leader, CB Deatrick Nichols, on a one-year contract!” In this offseason period, and with more time for teams to prepare and analyze what is needed, more XFL players might be finding opportunities to sign with NFL teams. The XFL has served as expected in that aspect. Even though this 2020 season won’t be able to continue, the XFL has plans to continue with a 2021 campaign.
