The New Orleans Saints could have Brees on the field soon
Brees wants back in by Week 8
Teddy Bridgewater has helped the New Orleans Saints develop a winning record this season, carrying the team through three straight victories. He’s been filling in for first-string quarterback Drew Brees, who is still going through therapy following surgery to the thumb on his throwing hand, but he might not be around for too much longer. If Brees is able to recover the way he anticipates, he’ll be back on the field by Week 8.
Brees was on the sidelines last week, the first step toward making back onto the field. This past weekend, he showed off his recuperation on Instagram, publishing some videos that showed him passing the ball. He desperately wants back in and is doing everything he can to expedite his rehabilitation.
The Saints are probably not as anxious. They’re not going to be willing to risk their million-dollar star so quickly, especially given Bridgewater’s performance. He has completed more than 70% of his passes and has a current passer rating of 99.5. He’s the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL, but the Saints made the smartest move ever by picking him up.
The team may choose to wait until Week 10 – or later – depending on how the therapy goes and how Bridgewater performs against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Chicago Bears in the next two games. Until Brees is 100% ready – per the doctors, not per Brees – he most likely won’t be on the field. Given how well Bridgewater has been doing, there’s no reason to rush anything.
