OCU launches new eSports tournament to a huge crowd
The River Rumble eSports event proved extremely popular
Oklahoma City, OK had a lot going on this past weekend. The Riversport Boathouse District saw everything from the OKC Thrive Outside Expo to the Oklahoma Regatta Festival, but it was something different that caught the most attention. An eSports event put together by Oklahoma City University (OCU) proved to be the most popular.
This past Saturday, gamers and gaming fans joined together in the Devon Boathouse for the River Rumble eSports tournament. The all-day event provided a lot of entertainment, as well as gaming competitions, classic arcade games and more. Super Smash Bros. was an especially popular event, drawing more than 200 players.
There was also a high school invitational tournament, with teams from area schools participating in Rocket League to earn prizes. Among those who joined were Union High School, U.S. Grant High School, Putnam City High School and many more, but it would ultimately be Putnam that cruised to victory.
Oklahoma is finding eSports to be more than just a pastime. Many schools now have established eSports organizations that participate in League of Legends, Clash Royale, Super Smash Bros., Overwatch and others. Putnam City North’s coach, Joseph Gravitt, explains, “Having coached a half dozen other sports, it’s not any different from any other sport. This way (we’ll) get them involved in a school activity where they have to show up to school and have to have their attendance or they can’t play. They have to have their grades up and have their eligibility or they can’t play, just like a football player or a basketball player.”
