NFL Teaser-Bet Of The Week
What is a teaser?
If you’ve ever bet on sports before, you’ve likely tried your hand at a parlay, which is when you place a collection of wagers together in a single bet to increase your payouts. Teaser bets are almost identical to parlays except for the fact that it provides you with extra points on each one of the wagers (at the cost of lower payouts). So, for example, rather that parlaying the Patriots -10 with the Packers at -7, you could play them using a 6-point teaser, meaning that the new lines become Patriots -4 and Packers -1 (since you are ‘given’ 6 points on each leg of the bet). Just as in a parlay, all legs of a teaser must be winners in order to book your profits.
What is proper teaser strategy?
Although you can teaser essentially any games you like, there are a couple of key rules to follow if you’re looking to maximize your long-term expectation; these are as follows:
1. Generally speaking, teasing across the zero (for example, taking a -1 favorite and teasing it to +5) has not been historically profitable in either direction. The one exception to this rule is teasing a road favorite of exactly -3.5 to -4, which has shown to be slightly profitable as a 7-point teaser.
2. The most profitable teasers are home favorites of 7.5-9 points and underdogs of 1-2.5 points (no matter if home or away)
3. NFL teasers have historically had a much higher success rate when the over-under is 49 or less.
Teaser-Bet Of The Week
Although it doesn’t fall into the exact parameters of the maximally profitable teaser strategy (sports-books understand how profitable teasers can be and thus generally try to shade away from optimal numbers, making them increasingly tough to find), there is still edge to be found in certain situations near those magic numbers. For me this week that situation is the bookend teaser (Thursday Night game and the Monday Night game), taking the 49ers -10 (vs the Cardinals) and the Cowboys -7 (vs the Giants) and teasing them down 6 points to create a 9ers -4/Cowboys -1 teaser at -120 odds (risk $120 to win $100 in addition to your original capital). With the Cowboys essentially turned into a moneyline bet against a porous Giants secondary and the still undefeated 49ers facing one of their division rivals, this seems like a great opportunity to get a bet in on the heavy favorites while not having to sweat such large spreads.
