Honda and Reddit hook up for video game
The retro-style game is being offered through the social media platform
Auto manufacturer Honda is looking to drum up more business by turning to social media. While advertising on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more is nothing new, the company is taking a different approach and is launching a video game directly on a social media platform. Honda Circuit made its way to Reddit for the first time last Friday.
The game was developed with games developer Mod Op and can be accessed through promoted posts on the site. Players can choose one of three Civics to race –Type R, Hatchback or Sedan – and can also choose a Team Liquid Civic. The latter is a co-branding effort that comes from a partnership established this past January between Honda and the eSports team.
The fastest recorded times will ultimately go on a ten-position leaderboard that changes with each track. Several tracks are going to be offered, starting with Honda Circuit, which will run throughout all of October. Four Liquid athletes will also be involved, streaming the game at peak viewership times every week for the next month.
The game is “simple, yet challenging,” and is designed to target the large audience of gamers on the social media platform. This segment is said to consume more than 1.2 billion page views each month, and about 40% of Reddit-linked gamers spend over ten hours weekly playing video games. Honda’s manager of media strategy, Phil Hruska, states, “It’s important for Honda to connect with the online gaming community on a more genuine, deeper level.”
