Kentucky Fried Chicken is rumored to be getting into eSports
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is certainly breaking the mold with just about everything. The Double Down chicken sandwich puts chicken between two other pieces of chicken and adds bacon, cheese and sauce for what has been described as the ultimate chicken sandwich. It also created a plant-based “chicken” sandwich that it offered in just one store in Atlanta, GA, and which sold out almost immediately. While pushing the envelope in the kitchen is expected from a restaurant, KFC has gone well beyond the deep fryers and the grills and is now ready to get into eSports.
KFC just released a video on social media that offers a strange hint at something that might be on its way. The video portrays a group of pro Rainbow Six players battling it out to a heavy metal soundtrack and is accompanied by an ominous caption: “Cash and chicken to be won… See you there #KFCR6.” What “there” is and “where” it can be seen aren’t clear, but everything will apparently become known on September 23, the date included in the video.
There are many possibilities. Perhaps KFC, which is owned by Yum! Brands, could have worked out a sponsorship deal with a Rainbow Six team, or some other eSports group. It could be that KFC is simply sponsoring an event. Or, Colonel Sanders left guidelines in his will that his legacy was to be carried on through video game competitions.
This wasn’t the only peculiar news to come out of KFC this week. The company is introducing a dating sim app that requires users to make their way through a culinary school and win Colonel Sanders affection.
Looking at some of the changes the company has made since the Colonel passed away, it seems that the company now has an “anything goes” business policy.
