To Scottie Pippen, On Playing With Jordan
It was reported that Scottie Pippen once had this to say about playing with Michael Jordan (the almost-universal GOAT):
“All they’re going to remember is that Jordan won. None of us feel like we got our proper dues.”
While I understand what Pippen is trying to say to a certain extent, I really don’t see the merit when you look at it closely. Pippen was a great all-around player who could score, rebound, pass and even play terrific defense.
But a closer look at his stats show that his career-high in points was just 22.2 PPG. That was in the 1993-94 season, one of the years that Jordan was on his “hiatus”.
Pippen was still named one of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time, so that fact alone means he can not be considered underrated.
Pippen not getting the equal share of the limelight during the Bulls dominating run (6 titles) is the price he had to pay when riding shotgun with the ultimate greatness in Jordan. He should be happy to be part of one of the greatest dynasties that the NBA has ever seen.
So to Pippen or anyone else on that Bulls dynasty team that feels the need to complain, I say this with complete empathy and understanding of your circumstances:
“Please do us all a favor and just….stop!”
