Indiana ready to launch sports gambling this weekend
Sportsbooks are coming to Hoosiers just before the NFL regular season
The wait is over. The NFL regular season is going to kick off on September 5 and, with it, a new era of sports gambling in the US. Part of that lineup includes sportsbooks in Indiana and, despite previous beliefs that no entity would be ready, sports gambling will officially kick off in the Hoosier State this Sunday.
Three casinos are already chomping at the bit and will be ready to flip the switch as soon as the clock rolls over. The Ameristar East Chicago, the Indiana Grand and the Hollywood Casino are all going to launch their sportsbooks on Sunday. Horseshoe Hammond will be ready on September 4 and French Lick Casino will turn on the lights on September 6.
All five were just approved for sports gambling this past Wednesday by the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC). Its executive director, Sara Gonso Tait, explains, “These five casinos have substantially demonstrated to the satisfaction of the commission that they’ve met every requirement so far.”
More approvals are set to come. Winner’s Circle, an off-track betting facility, and Blue Chip Casino are hopeful that they can launch operations this coming week once the approvals are in place, and another six could be added, as well.
What still needs to be tweaked is mobile sports betting. According to Tait, “We have received mobile-related materials and submissions. We’ve had some things happen as related to mobile that are essential. GeoComply is now a licensed supplier, which is huge. The emergency rules already contemplate mobile. We’re all focused on retail right now, but we’ll be able to very quickly shift to mobile once that’s requested.”
