Field of Dreams gets called to the Big Leagues
30 years after one of the greatest sports movies of all time prophesied that “if you build it, they will come”, Major League Baseball has finally decided that they will build it, and that 8,000 (paying) baseball fans shall indeed come.
Scheduled for August 13th of next season (2020), a game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will be played on the site of the classic Kevin Costner film Field Of Dreams, located in Dyersville, Iowa.
To accommodate the event, a temporary 8000-person stadium will be erected and include windows in the outfield walls for a view of the cornstalks surrounding the area that played such a visual role in the original film.
The stadium will be constructed adjacent to the original movie location, which continues to be a popular tourist destination for both movie and sport fans to this day.
“As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular-season game to the site of ‘Field of Dreams,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”
Being a few hours from Chicago, the game will be considered a White Sox home game. And I can’t wait to watch it!
