2020 Call of Duty season details leaked
The league is going to work through a different strategy next year
As eSports leagues go, Call of Duty is always a fan-favorite. Activision Blizzard is making preparations for the upcoming season starting next year and will undoubtedly want to make it even more exciting than the previous season. While no official announcement has yet been made, some details have reportedly been released; however, Activision has yet to confirm the authenticity of what has made its way to the public realm.
The season, which runs January to July, will reportedly be a franchise-based city league, according to Dexerto. Teams are going to have to have a General Manager in place, as well as between 7-10 players on their rosters. In addition, the minimum salary is going to reportedly be set at $50,000.
The team slots, looking down the road, could cost as much as $45 million for expansion teams if Activision keeps Call of Duty on track. That figure is expected to be commanded within ten years, and at least 28 city teams are forecast to be in place sometime in the future.
Media outlets that want to cover the league will have to be ready to pull out the checkbook, as media rights are expected to run $20 million. Activision is taking its cue from the Overwatch League, which picked up $82 million in revenue its first year – $57 million more than had been expected. As a result, gaming and eSports leaders are going to hold out for larger payments to see more involvement in the sport.
It should be pointed out that these updates are not verified, and Activision has stated that some of the details are not completely accurate. It told Dexerto, “As a matter of policy, we don’t typically comment on rumors and speculation. What we will say however is that there are factual inaccuracies in this reporting. Further information on the future of Call of Duty esports is forthcoming and we look forward to sharing it with the community soon. In the meantime, we’re watching and celebrating the 2019 Call of Duty World League Championship taking place this weekend.”
