Maurice Hawkins sued by backer
The poker pro hasn’t paid money owed to a supporter
Maurice Hawkins may have more WSOP Circuit rings and over $3 million in live tournament winnings, but the Florida poker pro apparently isn’t always able to keep up with his debts. An ongoing dispute that has lasted for more than two years is gathering steam as Hawkins still has not made good with one of his backers. According to Randy Garcia, who has invested heavily into the player, he is still owed over $100,000. Unfortunately for Hawkins, this isn’t the first time he has been called out for not taking care of his responsibilities.
Garcia is suing Hawkins to try and recuperate $103,000 that is still owed to him. He began backing Hawkins in 2017 and recently said on Twitter in what he called a public service announcement (PSA), “PSA no one ever stake @mauricehawkins,” tweeted Garcia. He has owed me $103k for 2 years now. Have proof of him confirming this. Keeps saying to me ‘be patient’ after he has cashed for over $1m yet still refuses to pay. Have filed a lawsuit against him. Please retweet this to help spread the word.”
Hawkins has 13 WSOP Circuit rings, including two he won this year. He has earned just shy of $3.8 million, according to Hendon Mob, since 2005.
Hawkins has been in another staking dispute, that one with an attorney from Tallahassee, FL, Hally B. Lewis. He apparently owed Lewis $22,000 and, after the debt was made public, reportedly arranged to settle the claim amid assertions from Lewis that the claim was made “in error” following some miscommunication.
In the latest ordeal, Hawkins reportedly admitted to owing the money, telling Garcia in a text message, “Going to be completely honest. Due to both of our situations. I’m asking if it’s possible to combine the cash I have with what I owe you and if you are able to back me in future. We can start back up. It really only takes one tourney but sometimes life [throws us] a curveball. Either way, I will pay you back along the way. Numbers are as follow when we start back up. Makeup 42,846. Owe you 108,666.”
