DraftKings and the PGA announce major deal
Professional golf will never be the same again
Today’s PGA Tour is definitely not the same as it was 20 years ago. New technology has been introduced to try to boost fan participation over the past several years, but none will have the impact that is expected from the PGA’s latest revelation. The leading golf association in the world is teaming up with daily fantasy sports (DFS) company DraftKings.
DraftKings is now the “official daily fantasy game of the PGA Tour.” In return for the placement, the DFS and sports gambling leader will turn all of its daily golf contests into “PGA Tour DraftKings Fantasy Golf” contests. These will allow fans to win cash by participating in DFS golf contests as they compete against other players or in private customized contests.
The senior VP of media for the PGA Tour, Luis Goicouria, says in a statement, “We are excited to partner with DraftKings, an industry leader in innovation and fan engagement, in this groundbreaking step for the PGA TOUR. The partnership with DraftKings provides the TOUR with a unique opportunity to innovate in a new industry and to further engage our fans.”
Players involved in the fantasy golf leagues will be able to receive real-time video highlights from the actual golfers’ activity and will lead to promotional material for both entities being displayed on their platforms. The two will also work together to make other real-time product enhancements through PGA’s ShotLink data feed.
DraftKings Chief Business Officer Ezra Kucharz adds, “Golf continues to grow in popularity among DFS players globally at DraftKings and is our fourth-largest sport in terms of engagement, out of 15 total offerings. Our partnership with the PGA TOUR signals a mutual commitment to excellence in customer experience along with a new era in golf fandom and engagement.”
