Casino workers to strike at Eldorado property
The strike will be held at the Isle Casino Pompano Park in Florida
Members of the UNITE HERE Local 335, which represents employees in South Florida and elsewhere, are planning on going on strike. Specifically, the action will be launched against Isle Casino Pompano Park in Pompano Beach after workers at the venue agreed to the strike over the weekend. The casino is owned by Eldorado Resorts and it will be the first strike launched by casino workers in South Florida.
Eldorado purchased the property from Isle of Capri Casinos in May 2017. After that, over 80 union employees were let go, leading to a certain degree of animosity. When the employees got together to vote on the possibility of a strike this past weekend, 93% agreed.
“Employee frustration and dissatisfaction with the company’s constant reductions to staff levels and amenities for guests led to Saturday’s vote,” says a statement by UNITE HERE Local 335. At issue now is the recently announced merger of Eldorado with Caesars and concerns that more employees will be forced out of work.
UNITE HERE is one of the largest casino workers’ unions in the US. It represents, through its different locals, a majority of casino employees across the country and has organized a number of strikes over the past year. Most have been against Las Vegas area casinos, but the union is becoming more aggressive in its efforts to protect its members.
Over the past year, there have been a number of strikes organized by casino employees throughout North America. Fueled by the success of a strike over pay at a Hard Rock venue, more unions have been working to try and receive better deals and ensure a better future for casino employees.
