Two more Station Casinos venues unionize
Employees are apparently unhappy with the treatment they receive from casino management
This past April, Palms Casino Resort, a venue owned by Station Casinos, decided to unionize. Workers voted, approved the measure and prepared to move forward, in spite of Station’s objections. The backlash against the workers from management was severe enough that the casino operator was ultimately accused of violating federal labor laws. In what could be a show of solidarity for Palms’ employees, or, perhaps, a feeling of insecurity, workers at two more Stations properties have overwhelmingly agreed to unionize, as well.
Employees at Fiesta Rancho and Sunset Station, both in Las Vegas, agreed to join the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 this past weekend – Fiesta Rancho employees on Friday and Sunset employees on Saturday. The vote was extremely lopsided, with 85% of Fiesta employees and 83% of Sunset employees saying yes.
According to Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Geaconda Agüello-Kline, “Workers are standing up and fighting! Two Station Casinos’ properties have voted to unionize by a majority this week. We call on Station Casinos to immediately to negotiate and settle a fair contract for the workers at Fiesta Rancho, Sunset Station, Palms, Green Valley Ranch, Palace Station, and Boulder Station.”
Both of the unions are part of the larger UNITE HERE union, which represents casinos and hospitality groups across the country. It has seen its numbers grow particularly faster in the past year, fueled by changes in the industry that seem to be taking more privileges away from employees while, at the same time, not altering executive-level compensation.
According to Ronal Portillo, a cook at Fiesta Rancho, “I’m fighting for my families’ future. I’m a child of a Culinary Union guest room attendant, and I saw when my family had good healthcare benefits. My mom had peace of mind because she didn’t have to worry about taking me to the doctor. As a parent myself, I work hard every day to provide for my family and make this company successful – we don’t want to be left behind.”
