New Gears of War announced during E3 2019
This will be the fifth installment of the popular game, and a new eSports competition emerges
Gears of War may not be the most popular game on the market, but it definitely has its own following. Last year, the pro league pot reached about $3 million, showing that there is definitely some interest in Gears of War eSports competitions. At the recent E3 2019 conference, a new version of the game was announced by the duo behind the previous versions, Microsoft and Coalition Studio. This next Gears 5, though, is going to be different than the others, including through a tie-in to the Terminator movie franchise.
Gears 5 will follow Kait Diaz as she searches to answers behind strange dreams possibly connected to a necklace she inherited after her mother passed away. Making an appearance (or at least a voice) in the game is Linda Hamilton from Terminator, and her movie character, Sarah Connor, can be played in the game through the installation of an additional Terminator: Dark Fate character pack. Additionally, gamers can choose to take on the form of the Terminator himself, but without Arnold Schwarzenegger’s participation.
Speaking on the Gears-Terminator connection, Coalition Studio head Rod Fergusson stated, “It was just one of those things where we’ve always been fans of the Terminator franchise and we’re here coming back with James Cameron and Linda Hamilton and we’re just very excited. When you look at Sarah Connor as a character, she really resonates with us in terms of how we’re telling Kait’s story. Kait went from this outsider civilian into this warrior who’s trying to save humanity. It’s kind of the same story for Sarah Connor. And so this idea of bringing these two franchises together in a really cool way is exciting to us.”
Gears of War has regularly been seen in a number of eSports competitions, including the Boston Open this past April. The final showdown pitted OpTic against Ghost, and it was Optic who won the best-of-three battle with a shutout.
