Florida University launches largest collegiate eSports arena in the country
Full Sail University cuts the ribbon on its new eSports center
The Fortress is now open. That’s the name Full Sail University in Orlando, FL gave its new eSports arena, the largest collegiate eSports facility in the US. The arena had been announced less than a year ago and is now open for business following a ribbon-cutting ceremony this past Tuesday.
Fortress is located on the school’s campus near the Full Sail Live events center. It offers movable stages, LED boards and innovative technology that allows it to stream collegiate and professional competitions from around the world. The integration of the arena in a university setting is a strong indication of how popular the activity is, and how important it has become as a means of generating additional revenue.
On hand were several school alum, as well as the mayors of Orland and Winter Park. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer stated during the ceremony, “Esports has just blown up so big. It’s already a billion dollar industry and it looks like it’s going to continue to grow.”
The facility spans 11,200 square feet, can seat up to 500 fans and was built at a price of $6 million. It will be overseen by the director of event technical operations at the university, Vince Lepore, who recently stated, “Full Sail has a unique ecosystem, in which students are intimately involved in our live productions. In addition, gaming is very much a part of our culture here through our game-design and -development [programs]. I think Full Sail is uniquely positioned to be a leader in esports. We are already a leader in a lot of the elements that go into esports production, so it just seemed like a natural fit for us.”
