The Fresh Prince gets behind Gen.G
Will Smith makes a sizable investment in the eSports organization
Gen.G is an eSports organization that has seen a great amount of success in a short few years. Among other ventures, it owns the South Korean Dynasty franchise, which is active in Overwatch leagues. The LA-based group has picked up some big sponsors in the past, including Samsung and Nighthawk Pro Gaming, and has brought in heavy hitters, including former MLB executive Chris Park, to take the company into the future. Now, it has completed a funding round that saw participation from several high-profile individuals such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air himself, Will Smith.
In total, Gen.G was able to secure $46 million in investments during the round. CEO Park told ESPN, “There were so many opportunities for the company to grow, particularly in continuing to build what we think is a top-of-the-industry portfolio of franchises and teams in the top and emerging leagues and competitive circuits. As well as now, as we scale into the second phase of our company, really developing our community of fans all around the world, including with the development of content around our players and our content creators.”
Gen.G has been expanding rapidly across the world and across the gaming community. It fields teams in games such as Overwatch, PUBG, League of Legends and Clash Royale and Fortnite and has participated in leagues around the globe. Alongside Smith, Japanese soccer player Keisuke Honda, LA Clippers minority owner Dennis Wong and former Alibaba executive Michael Zeisser invested in the funding round as well.
