eSports group TSM hires TMZ vet to lead PR efforts
The goal is to boost the organization’s public position
Team SoloMid (TSM) out of California has a new member on its team. The eSports organization has recruited the co-founder of TMZ, Gillian Sheldon, as its new public relations (PR) consultant in an effort to increase awareness of the company and help it build its brand. She officially began working with TSM as of March 1.
Sheldon is the owner of Cat Pack Consulting, a business consulting and PR firm based in Los Angeles. She was asked to join after TSM’s chief revenue officer, Brad Sive, met with 16 different PR firms trying to find the ideal candidate while managing expenses. She will be tasked with generating publicity for the eSports group’s digital programs and for a facility expected to be launched later this year.
The entrepreneur and executive explains, “TSM has maintained a low profile on purpose, so now my expertise in the media can bring more mainstream media to TSM and TSM to mainstream media. TSM is so much more than just an esports team. They’re a digital platform and what excites me is it’s about content.”
TSM began as a publicity company for the eSports community. It was charged with creating blogs and websites and later offered its own team. Sive explains, “Most other teams were [started] as teams and tried to make money competing and selling sponsorships. We actually have a totally different path.”
TSM reportedly now has the second highest following on social media for eSports and is reportedly worth $225 million. It manages 11 different websites and the use of PR is seen as a great way to reduce the learning curve faced by businesses looking to enter the eSports industry.
Adds Sive, “[Many] don’t know that because it’s such a new industry, especially brands. It’s easier for us to get this out into the larger brand conversations through PR and [communications] channels, and I think that will make it easier to help people understand who we are.”
