Man beats, robs 80-year-old at Twin Rivers casino
The assailant was apprehended shortly after the attack
An 80-year-old gambler became the victim of an assault at the Twin River Casino in Rhode Island yesterday. Fortunately, he wasn’t seriously injured, but did require medical attention. Also fortunately, for his own stupidity, the assailant was caught soon after the assault occurred.
Police were called to the casino around 1 PM yesterday for what was classified a “strong-armed robbery.” They found the victim, an 80-year-old patron who wasn’t identified, who was being treated for a bloody nose and an abrasion on his hand. The police began to question him on what had happened and discovered that the victim had been sitting next to another man who, at one point, asked for a cigarette.
Police officers continued, “After receiving the cigarette, [the assailant] reached over and grabbed cash from the victim which he was holding in his other hand. The force knocked the victim over causing him to strike his head and face against the gaming machine.”
The assailant was identified as 21-year-old Richard Settipane from North Reading, Massachusetts. He had fled the scene after the assault and theft, but wasn’t smart enough to leave the casino. Police found him at a gaming table with the cash and a “white powdery substance in a plastic baggy.”
Settipane was charged with first-degree robbery, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. It’s a shame being dumb isn’t against the law, or that could have been added to the list of charges, as well.
