Lord of the Rings character gets a video game
The game will reportedly center on Gollum
Gollum was a vital character in the Lord of the Rings movies and he is about to become a vital character in a new video game. Gollum, or Smeagol, as his alter-ego was called, is going to be the primary figure in a new action-adventure video game being developed by German video game developer Daedalic Entertainment.
Daedlalic has partnered with Middle-earth Enterprises to launch the new game, which will see Gollum after discovering the ring, but before the timeline in The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings. The game will be decision-based, allowing the gamer to choose which side to support – Gollum or Smeagol.
Daedalic co-founder and CEO Carsten Fichtelmann told The Hollywood Reporter, “You already have that big conflict in the character, two voices talking to you continuously, which means there is a good reason there are decisions to make in the game: the Smeagol decisions or the Gollum decision.” He added, “Our goal was to present a storytelling experience. About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing ‘Lord of the Rings.’ After some negotiations, it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years.”
Daedalic has previously released other successful titles, such as the Deponia franchise and The Long Journey Home. Lord of the Rings: Gollum is expected to be released to PC and consoles sometime in 2021.
