Team Envy releases FIFA star over controversial comments
In 1989, one of the worst brawls in soccer history left a black eye on the sport after 96 people were trampled and hundreds more injured during a match at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England. It is an event that is still remembered today and is a sensitive subject that most respect. For one notable member of the eSports team Team Envy, recent comments he made regarding the tragedy has now cost him his spot on the team.
Josh “Jablett” Ablett was involved in an apparent group chat recently when the subject of the event that day in April 1989 came up. While most of the group was talking positively about “the 96,” in reference to the 96 lives lost, Jablett decided to pipe in with “Fuck the 96.” He went on to say that he was going to create an eSports squad that would make fun of the disaster.
A screenshot of the conversation was later posted on Twitter by Dean Coombes, a freelance eSports coordinator. He added, “I hope you never get the chance to step foot in a FIFA Esport Venue ever again. You coward.”
It didn’t take long for the comments to reach Team Envy, which subsequently announced that it had let Jablett go. In a tweet from yesterday, it said, “As an organization that takes pride in promoting friendly and safe gaming competition across the globe, Team Envy takes any insensitive comments or behavior by our players and staff seriously. As a result of recent comments made online, John, ‘Jablett’ Ablett’s contract with Team Envy Fifa has been terminated immediately.”
Ablett has not issued a response or an apology and has since changed his Twitter account to private.
