Fortnite gives Epic Games epic winnings
Who would have thought that a game that was offered just for fun could turn into such a huge success? Video game developer Epic Games released Fortnite: Battle Royale in the summer of 2017, but it didn’t gain significant support until this year. The response has been so huge, in fact, that Epic has earned about $3 billion from a game that costs nothing for users to play.
Epic has made a solid reputation of offering games that prove to be a hit with the public, but it’s safe to say that no one expected Fortnite to receive the following that it has. Infinity Blade and Gears of War have been extremely popular games; however, neither garnered the popularity of Fortnite.
According to some estimates, there are over 200 million Fortnite players across the globe. That figure is as of this past November and is 75 million more than what was seen in June. Its fame has been so great that Epic wants to turn it into an eSports competition and has launched the $100-million “Fortnite World Cup.”
Fortnite is free to play; however, users are able to make in-game purchases to enhance their characters. Most are simply cosmetic improvements, such as Fortnite dances. While the dances themselves have become popular purchases, they haven’t been without their own problems. Several celebrities are suing Epic over accusations that the company stole their moves.
The popularity of the video game has been helped by an Epic initiative to put it at the top of the Twitch livestreaming platform. Those efforts have paid off, with Fortnite’s Tyler “Ninja” Blevins becoming Twitch’s recipient of the Best Content Creator award earlier this month.
