WPT partnering with blockchain sportsbook startup
There have been a few instances of cryptocurrency being highlighted in the poker industry this year, including a cryptocurrency-based poker tournament at Harrah's this past July. Many have often said that poker and crypto were a perfect fit and, now, the World Poker Tour (WPT) is looking to step into the arena. It has announced a new partnership with a blockchain-based sportsbook, FansUnite.
The partnership is designed to increase WPT's popularity in Europe and Asia. FansUnite will be the "official partner" of the WPT as the two jointly offer a number of promotions to expand their footprints. They will also be working in tandem with Leicester City Football Club of the English Premier League, which is an official partner of FansUnite.
According to WPT CEO Adam Pliska, “We are thrilled to introduce FansUnite to the WPT’s millions of poker players and fans across the globe through television, digital media, live events, and more, and we look forward to furthering strategic partnership integrations and activations with FansUnite."
Pliska's take on the partnership was supported by Darius Eghdami, CEO of FansUnite. He said in a statement, “Over the last two decades the World Poker Tour has been at the forefront of gaming entertainment. WPT’s worldwide reach, instant name recognition, hundreds of thousands of players and millions of fans make them the class of their industry. This partnership introduces FansUnite to millions of poker fans across the globe, and gives WPT partners the first look at our industry-changing technology."
In an interview with PokerNews, Pliska added, "Blockchain technology has clearly been embraced by many players on the WPT and has helped fuel some of the growth of poker around the globe. Understanding the impact these new technologies can have on our game is something we are closely monitoring and very pleased to be a part of."
