Squad Streaming on Twitch Could Change Esports
Twitch announced several new features slated to join its platform in the coming weeks. One of them, Squad Streaming, has the potential to change the entire esports industry. The feature disrupts the current way esports are viewed and has major implications for battle royale game streaming.
The concept behind the feature is so simple and obvious it is a wonder Twitch did not add it sooner. It allows streamers to collaborate and compete or play together within a single game. Streamers have been doing this for some time, but fans have been forced to select a single channel and watch through only one steamer’s perspective.
The new feature allows viewers to watch multiple streamers through a single interface. Squad streaming accommodates up to four streamers within one screen. Twitch has yet to announce the official launch date of the new feature but it is expected to be made available before the end of the year.
Squad Streaming will appeal to a wide variety of streamers but it is the battle royale influencers who are expected to disrupt the industry through its use. While Fortnite’s official Twitch channel attracts viewers, it already struggles to compete with the viewership of Fortnite players such as Ninja.
Squad Streaming events staged by the most popular influencers in the game could easily surpass the viewer numbers of major esports tournaments. Putting a tool like Squad Streaming in the hands of gamers could potentially cause a dramatic shift in power from publishers and tournament organizers over to the streaming personalities.
