Mavericks hires sports gambling pro Bob Voulgaris
One of the world's most prolific NBA sports gamblers and poker players is headed to Texas. Dallas Mavericks owner Marc Cuban has recruited Bob Voulgaris to be the team's Director of Quantitative Research and Development, a move that “is expected to utilize Voulgaris as a strategic thinker who will help examine on-court strategy in big-picture ways," according to sources close to the deal.
Voulgaris has built up an impressive bank worth millions by analyzing NBA games and identifying errors in bookmakers' bets. He also is behind a predictive model, the Ewing, used in NBA games. By the time he was 25 years old, he was placing bets worth $1 million each week and, when not gambling on sports, has now racked up over $3 million in live-action poker tournaments.
The recruitment of Voulgaris shows the continued change in the sports landscape as it increasingly embraces sports gambling. Cuban hopes that the savant's analytical ability will help the team improve its position and performance. He will also undoubtedly hope to glean some sports gambling wisdom from the expert.
After the Supreme Court shot down PASPA this past May, Cuban said, “It doubled the value of the professional sports franchises in a second. It will increase interest, it will add to what happens in our arena and in stadiums. It will increase the viewership for our biggest customers online and on TV. It helps traditional television because it’s much lower latency, whereas online, because of cachet, it’s much higher latency.”
