AMD Has a 'Secret Sauce' to Power Up New PlayStation and Xbox Consoles
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the semiconductor company that powers drivers and graphics processors, said it has some “secret sauce” for upcoming PlayStation and Xbox Consoles. AMD's teaser comes after rumors that both Microsoft and Sony are working on new consoles.
According to Lis Su of AMD, gaming is a major area of growth for the company. It has to do with market demand – with each new console players expect improved graphics and computing power. For AMD, this means double-digit growth, said Su.
The company is in the process of investing in new technology, but Su does not expect the end user to see the results of these innovations until a few years from now. She did not confirm if AMD's new technology was related to projects with Sony and Microsoft but mentioned some “good decisions” the company had made about semiconductors.
For now, both Microsoft and Sony are remaining tight-lipped about the specs of their next consoles. Microsoft confirmed last month that it is working on multiple Xbox consoles, but Xbox Boss Phil Spencer indicated the announcement came too early to include details. The last Xbox release was the One X in November 2017.
On the Sony side, rumors that the company is working on PlayStation5 have been circulating since the beginning of the year. A Sony executive reportedly said the next PlayStation could come out by 2021 and the PS4 is entering the end of its lifecycle. The last PlayStation console release was the PS4 in November 2016.
