Team World takes down Team Africa in annual game
Team World beat Team Africa 96-92 in their annual matchup this past Saturday. The game was held at the Sun Arena in Pretoria, South Africa, and pitted players from around the NBA playing against each other in support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. NBA World is comprised of players from different parts of the globe, while NBA Africa is represented by players with ties to the African continent.
It was a close game that saw Team Africa stage a second-half comeback after trailing 54-47 going into the lockers at halftime. They made a solid run, but fell short in a manner similar to their performance last year.
Danilo Gallinari’s 23 points helped propel Team World to victory and also helped him secure the Manute Bol MVP of the game. Several late-game buckets helped to stifle a Team Africa run that closed the gap with only a few minutes left in the game. 24 points and seven rebounds by Team Africa’s Joel Embiid proved to be key to the team’s rally, but the group ultimately couldn’t find a last-minute boost to capture what would have been its first victory.
The game brought to close a week of events that included a Basketball Without Borders camp and several activities to support a number of charities, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Africa, SOS Children’s Villages South Africa, UNICEF and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
