MGM and Boyd Gaming Announce ‘Unprecedented’ Online Gambling Partnership
Two national leaders in the gambling industry, MGM Resorts and Boyd Gaming, announced a partnership this week to spread online gambling and sports betting throughout the United States. The companies are calling their new initiative an “unprecedented” collaborative plan.
Combined, MGM and Boyd Gaming have operations in 15 states. Their new joint plan will include online poker, casino, and sports betting platforms as the opportunity becomes available state-by-state. According to a press release from MGM, the companies plan to boost their customer bases through igaming.
Though their plans are limited for now – only four states offer online gambling – six more states have plans to launch online sports betting by the end of 2018. The two companies will collaborate on igaming in all the states where they operate physical casinos as licenses become available in those states.
MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren described the partnership as a way to spread MGM’s M Life Rewards program and offer additional entertainment options to its customers. Keith Smith, CEO of Boyd Gaming, focused on the evolution of the gaming industry and the possibility for growth. Smith says the partnership will allow Boyd Gaming to spread into five more states and assume a leadership role in those markets.
MGM recently announced a separate deal with GVC to launch a 50/50 joint venture in sports betting. Both companies are contributing $100 million to launch the venture, which will be located in a major technology hub. The companies say they are searching for best-in-class talent to oversee the new platform.
