Ed Asner’s ‘Up the Ante’ poker fundraiser coming soon
The sixth installment of the Ed Asner & Friends Poker Tournament Celebrity Night is right around the corner. The annual event will be held on September 8 at Playa Studios in Culver City, CA, and will feature Asner alongside a number of Hollywood celebrities, top movie studio executives and sponsors. The poker event is held each year to raise funds for The Ed Asner Family Center (TEAFC), which is dedicated to helping a number of special needs groups.
In a press release about the event, Asner said, "Don’t miss our Celebrity Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament and Poker Night. Come compete against celebrities, friends and members of the entertainment industry together to raise funds for my new The Ed Asner Family Center. Our goal is to nurture and cultivate self confidence [sic] for those with special needs and to embrace and support their families."
Asner, who has a son and grandsons with varying degrees of autism, has been joined at the event in the past by stars such as Don Cheadle, Matthew Modine, Clancy, Brown, Wayne Brady, Rocky Carroll and many others who come out to support the worthwhile cause. This year, the event is expected to raise over $100,000 for TEAFC.
The center, whose mission is to help special-needs individuals and their families live normal lives, offers a variety of support functions. Among them, TEAFC has developed arts and career advancement programs in addition to mindfulness classes and counseling.
Registration for the tournament begins at 5:00 PM and the action gets underway an hour later. Poker players can register for just $200, and non-players for 125. Sponsorship packages are available. The event will offer a dinner buffet, cocktails, drawings and a silent auction. The top three winners will receive poker prizes.
